A Wilderness Hunt Years in the Making

Rich Harens recently completed his dream Wyoming wilderness elk hunt, an experience that demanded physical grit, mental toughness, and a deep appreciation for the journey. Here is Rich's story in his own words:

"My first elk hunt took place in Arizona in 2000 and I have been hunting them in Oregon most years from 2009 to the present and have been very successful. Over that time I've always dreamt about hunting elk in the wilderness for the experience, sleeping in a tent, seeing all the wildlife, traveling on horseback and being disconnected from the world. Obtaining an elk tag can be a complicated process. I chose Wyoming for my dream hunt and began purchasing preference points to secure a tag when I was ready. I decided 2025 was time!
While I had some idea what to expect, there was also a lot of unknown, physically and mentally. We had six hunters in camp for six days of hunting and two additional days for packing in / out. Each day we were on horseback for 8-12 hours. These were mountain horses, taller, wider and stronger than any of us had ever ridden. Of the six hunters, only three were able to finish due to body pain, altitude sickness and general lack of fitness. I ended up the last one standing on day six and harvested a beautiful bull elk on the last day to hunt. I'll also add I was the oldest!
I can say without a doubt, my fitness level achieved at Inguz played a key role in getting me through the hunt! A huge thank you to Andrew, Kate, Dave, coaches and other members who push me daily to be my best!
The hunt was a dream come true for an east coaster!"

Gratitude as a Performance Tool

Rich’s journey is a reminder that gratitude doesn’t just shape mindset—it sharpens purpose. Feeling grateful for the ability to move, train, and prepare for adventure turns effort into opportunity. It’s one more example of what happens when you stay consistent, stay humble, and stay connected to your reasons for training.

Why His Story Matters

Rich didn’t just finish a demanding hunt. He outlasted younger hunters, navigated long days at altitude, and relied on his training when it mattered most. His success reflects what we aim to build at Inguz: fitness that shows up when life demands more of you.

Gratitude grounded his mindset. Fitness carried him through. Resilience made him unstoppable.

Rich, thanks for inspiring the entire community.
